Britain named as 'EU card fraud capital'

21 November 2006

Card fraud is more prevalent in the UK than elsewhere in Europe, according to new research.

People using cards in Britain are twice as likely to be victims of card fraud crime than in the other seven member countries, a report from the European Security Transport Association reveals.

The number of credit cards used by British people could be the reason why residents are more vulnerable to this sort of crime, according to a spokesperson from UK payment association Apacs.

"Because we hold more cards than anyone else in Europe, we use them more than any other country in Europe … it is natural that we would see more card fraud in this country than any other European country," Mark Bowerman of Apacs commented.

Recent research from MasterCard revealed that consumers desire more security over telephone sales, with 78 per cent of customers stating that a personal chip and pin card reader would make them feel more comfortable when making payments over the phone.

Card- not- present transactions such as those over the internet or telephone account for the majority of card fraud crime.
